Rethinking Your Approach to Intonation on Violin

The first step to fixing bad intonation on the violin? Admitting it’s a problem.

Even highly trained violinists sometimes grapple with persistent intonation problems, a frustrating reality akin to a seasoned traveler inexplicably losing their way in a familiar city. More often than not, the trouble isn’t a lack of natural talent, but rather not giving enough sharp focus and careful attention to truly build a reliable and subtle ear for pitch. It all boils down to how quickly the brain can process those tones and guide the fingers just so.

Now here’s the thing: a lot of players spend so much time wrestling with the fingerboard or trying to master bowing technique that they forget about the real engine driving good intonation—the ears. A 2024 study published in eLife on speech and auditory feedback offers a clue. The brain, it turns out, has this amazing ability to suppress expected sounds and instead highlight errors or surprises in what we hear. That means when something’s out of tune, our brains can pick it up and send out a correction order—but only if the input is clean and clear. With the notes whizzing by, players only have a fraction of a second to make adjustments and, when the tonal center starts to slide, it quickly becomes a very slippery slope. You might blame your fingers, or bow angle, or rosin—or maybe you just think you’re not good at intonation. But really, it’s often just a matter of not having trained your ears and hands to really feel and hear what the string is doing.

That disconnect tends to show up in two key places: the bow arm and the left hand. With the bow, a player often pushes down too hard, trying to “dig in” to the string. But too much pressure actually chokes the sound before the string has a chance to vibrate fully. It’s like stomping on a trampoline—you don’t get bounce, just sag. The string wants to move side to side, not get squashed. In his Tonebase course, Pinchas Zukerman teaches this feeling as “catch and release”—instilled in him by his mentor Ivan Galamian—in which he presses the index finger down to create an initial sound and releases the pressure once the bow starts to travel. 

And in the left hand, a player might tend to mash the string down past where the note is already clear, which doesn’t help the sound—it actually throws the pitch sharp and deadens your sensitivity. Instead of working with the string’s natural resistance, you’re plowing right through it.

The reality is that the violin doesn’t respond well to brute force—it wants finesse. One of the best ways to understand this is to think of the way the body moves, mechanically speaking. Both the bow arm and the fingers work like Class 3 levers. That’s the type of lever where the force is applied between the fulcrum (the joint) and the load (the contact point). Think of a baseball bat, a tennis racket, or even a broom—tools that are built for speed and control, not for lifting heavy things. So when you’re using your finger to press the string, or your bow arm to move the bow across it, it’s not about muscling through the note—it’s about letting the mechanics of your body do their job efficiently.

And let’s be real: this flies in the face of a lot of old-school advice. Back in the day, players were told to drop their fingers “like little hammers.” But as Samuel Grimson wisely pointed out in his 1920 book Modern Violin Playing, that kind of thinking isn’t conducive to great tone. “The function of the fingers is to hold the string down to the fingerboard,” he wrote, “not to give a xylophone performance.” If you place the finger sensitively with a stable hand frame and let it feel the string give just a little as it goes down, you get much more control—and much better intonation.

This is where analogies with sports can really help. A tennis player doesn’t whack at the ball with all their might and hope it lands inbounds. They feel the resistance of the ball on the racket and adjust mid-swing. Power isn’t the only element of a golfer’s swing either—flexibility and execution are equally important. In both cases, sensitivity leads to precision. The violin is no different. If you ignore how the string responds under your fingers or bow, you’ll never build that feedback loop that helps you play in tune. Especially important is the position of the thumb. For example, just as tennis players need to set their feet before taking a swing—positioning themselves to maintain balance, generate power from the ground up, and align their body for an accurate shot—violinists need to move their thumb forward before using the fourth finger to enable a clean, balanced finger swing.

Demetrius Constantine Dounis (1886–1954), the legendary Greek violin pedagogue, agreed. As Daniel Phillips puts it in his Tonebase course on Dounis’ methods, the goal is “getting the most for minimum effort.”

You want your movements to be decisive yet gentle and sensitive, like petting a dog—not punching a typewriter. A common misunderstanding about bowing, as Phillips explains, is the belief that the dead weight of the arm should simply fall into the string. In reality, the arm should be supported and suspended just above the string, allowing the bow to connect without crushing as it swings in an arc. Phillips illustrates this with a useful analogy: “When beating on a drum, the arm needs to rebound and remain above the surface for resonance, rather than dropping after striking.” He adds, “Those that experience releasing their arm weight find it’s more like when you clap freely to make a loud sound, yet the arm does not fall down from gravity. Dounis calls it live weight as opposed to dead weight.”

In her 1955 article “Two Great Violin Teachers—Flesch and Dounis,” Dounis protégé Sybil Eaton wrote of her mentor, “He taught to play with normal cantabile tone that one had simply to use one’s own weight (always with the counter-pressure of the thumb) so that playing F brought a feeling of complete relaxation. He loved the simile of a pendulum, the light cord of the arm and weighted end of the hand, and the effortless swing of the arm with its own rebound.”

If the fingers derive their kinetic energy from the potential energy of the relaxed heaviness of the raised arm, it facilitates a relatively effortless transfer of force. A student of the Dounis approach, Kató Havas taught her students a similar concept of ‘winging’ the arm and shoulder to promote fluid bow strokes. At the beginning of the stroke, the deltoid muscle in the shoulder needs to relax to let weight fall into the first finger naturally.

As for the left hand, pure muscular force is also not the best way to preserve the needed sensitivity. Just as the right arm’s shoulder relaxes, fingers should descend in a natural arc from a relaxing base knuckle, aiming to crisply clear the note’s threshold with a sense of rebound on release, each movement a new impulse of energy. As Phillips explains, “This sound isn’t caused by the fingers banging down as we often think; however, putting our fingers down gradually is also a mistake, and we can hear a slurred intonation as a result. Even when playing slowly, there isn’t a gradual element in the fingers—it’s a binary ‘down’ or ‘not down.’ After the finger makes its initial contact, Dounis explained the impulse of vibrato is to recreate the sizzle of touching a hot stove.”

When you truly listen to what the string is telling you—both in tone and in touch—you unlock a new level of control. In the left hand, this might mean you’re able to hear the subtle pitch shift as your finger descends, letting you correct it before the note even fully sounds. In the bow arm, it means you can hear how the string reacts to different speeds and pressures and adjust to keep your tone centered and ringing.

Without frets or keys to guide them, string players need to use every tool in their toolbox to try to stay in tune. That’s why sympathetic vibrations—like a D on the A string making the open D ring—are so useful. Those little resonances act as a kind of tuning fork, letting you know you’re in the ballpark. But you can’t make use of them unless you’re listening carefully—and playing in a way that allows the string to vibrate clearly.

So, what’s the bottom line? Getting better at intonation doesn’t mean playing harder—it means playing smarter. You’ve got to train your ears to listen for subtle differences in pitch and tone, and train your body to move with speed and sensitivity, not brute strength. When you understand how your body works as a system of levers—and how the violin responds to just the right touch—you can finally break free from the cycle of tension, guessing, and correction. You stop fighting the instrument—and start dancing with it.
