In another incident highlighting the sometimes ambiguous nature of air travel with an instrument, violinist Rachel Barton Pine was denied boarding an American Airlines flight from Chicago’s O’Hare airport bound for Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she is scheduled to perform with the New Mexico Philharmonic this weekend. Though American’s policy states that small instruments may fly as carry-on items, provided there is space, the captain denied her entrance to the plane, citing the dimensions of her 1742 “ex-Bazzini ex-Soldat” del Gesù violin. Pine was able to travel to Albuquerque on another American flight early the next morning.
