March 21st marks J.S. Bach’s birthday, and this year it’s number 331. The great composer seems to be getting plenty of love this year, with his Violin Sonatas and Partitas being recorded by Rachel Barton Pine (Avie, available April 1) and Midori (Onyx Classics), among others. Bach’s music seems to invite re-recording, and a recent Strings feature about Matt Haimovitz’ 2015 project, The Cello Suites: According to Anna Magdalena (Pentatone/Oxingale Series) describes his approach to music he had recorded 15 years before. And while we’re on the subject of the Cello Suites, enjoy this feature from the archives: Jan Vogler and Pieter Wispelwey on their approaches to recording the iconic works.
