Winning the Fischoff has become a benchmark in the careers of emerging young ensembles. Each year, 49 ensembles are accepted into the pre-college and senior divisions. They come from America’s finest music schools, conservatories and preparatory schools.  Since its founding, more than 6,800 musicians have participated. Many have gone on to distinguished careers in music performance and education.

Founded in 1973 in South Bend, Indiana, the Fischoff has always emphasized developing, and not simply showcasing, the talents of its participants. After the competition’s live auditions, participants are given the opportunity to discuss their performances at length with the jurors. Master classes with the jurors are also given to pre-college ensembles. The musicians report that the juror responses, written critiques and master classes are highlights of their Fischoff experience.
