SF Symphony Racks Up 3 Grammys
The San Francisco Symphony and maestro Michael Tilson Thomas emerged the biggest winners in classical music at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. Their two-disc set Mahler Symphony No. 8 in E-flat major; Adagio from Symphony No. 10 (SFS Media) won Best Classical Album; Best Engineered Album, Classical; and Best Choral Performance. The album was just the latest in the orchestra’s Mahler cycle project, which began in 2001 and has since won a total of seven Grammys. Other victors at this year’s Grammys include cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who won Best Classical Crossover Album for Yo-Yo Ma & Friends: Songs of Joy and Peace (Sony Classical) and the Emerson String Quartet, which won Best Chamber Music Performance for Intimate Letters (Deutsche Grammophon). grammy.com

Robert Mann Reunites with Juilliard Quartet
At the Juilliard String Quartet’s performance with new first violinist Nick Eanet on February 22 in Alice Tully Hall, violist and JSQ founding member Robert Mann will join them for Mozart’s String Quintet in D major. Also on the program will be Mendelssohn’s String Quartet Op. 44, No. 1, and Davidovsky’s String Quartet No. 5. Limited free tickets will be available February 9. juilliard.edu

World Premieres Garnish Composer Portraits Series
Benet Casablancas’ Four Darks in Red will be performed by the Perspectives Ensemble on February 25 and Sebastian Currier’s Body Music will be performed by the Argento Chamber Ensemble on March 5 as part of Columbia University’s Composer Portraits series at Miller Theatre in New York. millertheatre.com

Orchestre Philharmonique Plans US Tour
The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, lead by maestro Myung-Whun Chung and joined by 1998 International Violin Competition of Indianapolis laureate Svetlin Roussev, will embark on a tour March 5–10 through Chicago, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles. Mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie van Otter will also join for an all-Ravel performance. cami.com

Kuss Quartet & More at Italian Festival
The Kuss String Quartet will take a leading role June 14–20 in the third International String Quartet Festival in Reggio Emilia, Italy. The German ensemble will school young quartets, amateur participants, and an audience in everything Schumann.
